THE SANTALAND DIARIES is a brilliant counterpoint to the traditional "Norman Rockwell" and sugar plum fairy Christmas. Out of work, our narrator gains employment as a Macy's elf during the holiday crunch. At first the job is simply humiliating, but once the thousands of visitors start pouring through Santa's workshop, he becomes battle weary and bitter. Is Sedaris just trying to cynically jeer at what's wrong with people and Christmas, or is there glimmer of hope that Christmas hasn't been commercialized to death?
Parental Guidance: There is some crude humor and rough language. There are some parents who on occasion yell at their children, or say mean things to other adults. David Sedaris is brilliant in dragging us through the muck of human experience so that though tarnished we emerge as better individuals on the other side.
